Please welcome Hannah (Part 8) Finally finished!

Hi, I´m back to share the promised photos of Hannah! The weather is terrible here in Denmark, so it´s really hard to take really good photos without daylight, but I have tried, and here are my results:

My husband said she was a bit pale, so I gave her a little more rosie cheeks and nose.  I also made her eyebrows darker, and added clear varnish on her eyeballs and lips ;-)

I love her pose! She is standing firmly on both her feet, relaxed and in balance.

Today, I would like to talk about armature. In a artdoll, the armature is really important. It makes the doll sturdy and strong, and will prevent parts from breaking off and so on. It will also help the doll hold it´s own weight. Hannah has hot a strong armature, made with 4mm aluminum wire, steel wire, wooden sticks to control the joints and rock hard Magic sculpt to make hips and legs very strong.

Even though I thought the armature was strong enough, it wasn´t. Another thing that was annoying me was, that her legs kept bending in the wrong direction. And then suddenly her left leg broke of at the hip! I had to remove alle the quilt padding, the wooden sticks and open the entire armature, to discover that it was the aluminum wire that had broken apart! It had become weak after too much motion.

I therefor resculpted her entire legs with Magic Sculpt, then covered them with paperclay. Sanding, sanding and more sanding ;-) Not a fun proces, but necessary. The Magic Sculpt was probably getting a bit old, because it was really hard to sculpt, and that´s why I covered it up after with paperclay.

So, aluminum wire is not strong enough! I liked it because it was light and very easy to bend and work with, but the armature can´t brake like that! Depressinly, later on it braked again... This time at the shoulder.... It broke after she was almost done, so there is no way I´m opening her up again. Her arm is protected by layers of masking tape, quilt padding and glued clothing, but it was a tremendous dissapointment to me after all that work, to discover that the alumium wire broke again! I confess, that I have been posing her a lot, back and forth, up and down, to find her right posing statue, but a doll shouldn´t be sold as slightly poseable, if she has a aluminum armature, and that is what I thought I was maling. Over time, she will eventually brake, so this is my advise to all you doll artists out there: don´t use it aluminium wire.  Use strong and hard steel wire instead.

Even though she isn´t perfect, I still love her. She will stand in my studio radiating good vibrations. Thank god I didn´t sell her or a similar doll. What a shame to discover that it would brake one day.

Another funny thing is her facial expression. I think she´s looking very friendly, but my husband thinks that she looks worried. An old friend on Book of Faces found her a bit condescending! I thought to myself: "What??" How can it be, that we all are seeing her expression so differently? How do you see her expression?

Well, I guess it is back to the sculpting table for me. This time I´m bringing my new book with me, as recommended by Dee Schiller from Oddfae:

I´m off again, thank you for showing interest in my ramblings ;-)

Please welcome Hannah!! Finally finished!

Just dropping by to post a photo of Hannah! Jay!!!! She is finally finished, and I am very pleased with her!
I will post netter photos of her tomorrow, and write a blogpost about my experiences during her making. There are several things I need to share - especially about her armature. See you tomorrow!

Part 5: http://solannsworld.blogspot.dk/2013/11/please-welcome-hannah-part-5.html

Hannah is coming along nicely, and I want to show you her progress.
I have worked on her body, and give her more qulit batting. I don´t know if she is done. She is still a bit skinny, so I won´t dress her just yet.
I have painted her face. I do acrylic washes. She has emerald green eyes now. Hannash also needs eyelashes. I have some fake one from Hong Kong and will try to use them.
Her hair is almost done. The orange color was wrong, so I changed my mind and gave her dark brown. She is just adorable, and I cant wait to make her hat and dress!

Please welcome Hannah! (Part 2)

http://www.solannsworld.blogspot.dk/2013/10/starting-new-art-doll-please-welcome.html

I am doing some progress with my new witch. I´ve worked hard with her face, and now I´m finally satisfied.

Here is what I have for now:

My favorite part is her big nose! Perhaps it´s a thing from my training in puppetry, but I just love dolls with bog noses. (Puppets have big pointy noses because it makes it easier to see the direction the doll is looking). Some people claim that dolls are a representation of our own self, and just like dogs often look like their owners, dolls do too. I like the idea! I have a big nose too! All my dolls are little aspects of me!

Back to the doll: I baked her twice. My studio oven can´t do 275 F (130 °C). It´s a digital oven, and it can only bake at 257 F or 293 F, so I have to keep an eye on the doll at all times, and bake a bit longer than usual. Really stupid actually.
I totally ruined a doll once because I baked a doll with too high temperature. Just take a look:

Another one with a really big nose, right! I think I pushed the wrong button, and baked him at 446 F! After a couple of minutes it started to smoke! Never, ever do that! Keep an eye on your doll at all times, and use an oven thermometer and a timer.

After baking, I sandes her down with my buffer blocks (from my background with nail art). They are very good! I like them better than regular sanding paper.

Finally I give the head a coat of Translucent Liquid Sculpy. It smoothes the skin and give the doll a nice finish. Bake at 275 F for 6 minutes.

Now I´m going to start her hands. See you later this weekend for more updates.

Late night thoughts...

"I hear thunder in the distant.
 Dark skies are gathering.
Head under a carpet.
Who will bless the unwanted and give my heart some rest?"

I wrote a little poem. Small problems are maybe arising in my family. Not sure if I shall be worried or not...

Not much sculpting happening here tonight. Hannah´s face was almost done, untill I ruined her mouth, and that made me put her aside. Too late to start bigger projects. I need sleep ;-) Tomorrow is art school.

Here is one of my favorite songs ever. I especcially love the first video with all the nice pictures, even though I prefer the second  version of Nocturne with Anne Takle:

The lyrics are nice and dreamy too:

Now let the day just slip away

So the dark night may watch over you
Velvet blue, silent true
It embraces your heart and your soul
Nocturne

Never cry, never sigh

You don't have to wonder why
Always be, always see
Come and dream the night with me
Nocturne

Have no fear

When the night draws near
And fills you with dreams and desire
Like a child asleep so warm, so deep
You will find me there waiting for you
Nocturne

We will fly, claim the sky

We don't have to wonder why
Always be, always see
Come and dream the night with me'

See ya Friday!

Starting a new art doll - please welcome Hannah!! (Part 1)

I am starting a new doll tonight. It has been a very long time since I made a doll, and I feel a little rusty ;-)
But, I have decided that she will become a witch, and her name will be Hannah.

I use Prosculpt Polymer clay, and it is a blend between Caucasion and Fairy Light. I just use my pasta machine to soften and conditioning it.

Working on her face to start with, will give me the idea of her proportions in the end. I´m not good at making sketches in the beginning, I prefer to go along with the clay, and see where it will take me. It is nice to think like Leonardo da Vinci: "The doll is allready in there, you just have to carve away all the excess clay!" Or who said something like that anyway? I think I might have gotten it a bit wrong...

Tonight I thought I would like to show you how I start a face, and how it develops as I go along.

I start with a foil ball, and covers it with masking tape. Then I add clay. I make lines in the middle, and ind the center line of the face. Now I know where to put my eyeballs.

She looks scary now, right? This is small white prebaked Cernit balls.

Eyelids

More clay on the lower part of the face

Lower lip
Nose and cheeks

Oh - I´ve got so distracted, that I forgot to take pictures ;-)

This is enough work for one night!
Hannah's face is not finished, but I am too tired to do more work on here tonight. As I said, I'm a bit rusty. More to come tomorrow! Night!

PS: I like to use Dawn Schiller´s book "FaeMaker" as reference. This book is amazing!

Problems with baking Proscupt

Today I recieved my long awaited (signed) book "Faemaker" by Dawn Schiller! I couldn´t wait to see if I could make fantasy caracters like the ones she makes... And now I know that I can... But I can´t show it to you!
Well, It started out just perfect. I followed Dawns instructions, and made one of my best heads ever! I mean, it was a masterpiece! (In my own opinion any way...) Then I tried to bake it.... how I´d wish that I hadn´t done so...

Look for yourself...

I recently bought a new oven for baking my sculpts. I set the temperature to 125 Celcius, and it baked for 6-7 minutes!! It is some convection-oven.
I think I will just throw it out. It has apparently no use in my studio. I will go back to my old one. It was a pain in the neck, but at least I could control the heat.
Very well, at least I didn´t spend hours sculpting the hands and feet and baked them along with the head.
I will start over tomorrow.
Have you had disasters like this?

I added a link to a baking tutorial. After reading it, I am starting to wonder if I need a bigger oven? Mine is the kind that stands on the table. How big is yours?

Update on sculpting hands

Well, I sculpted a new pair of hands, following some guidence from fellow artist online, and watching tutorials I found on YouTube. Overall I was satisfied, but they broke during the baking... Must work with armature next time :-)

I received nice photo frame settings today

I just love theese! I like to sculpt tiny faces.
They are so fun to make, and I can´t wait until I´ve finished them with washes and a little hat.

Theese new silver tone frames will be so much fun!

Julebrocher

Her er halskæden færdig.
